Green Marketing Sputters in ’08 shifts in ’09 – Environmental Leader
“Observing that the first half of 2008 was probably the peak of green marketing, observed Russ Meyer of Landor Associates. But in the last six months, green marketing underwent a sharp decline. The tough economy will push marketers to take a “back to basics” approach in the coming year, experts predict.”
Following the bandwagon of saving the earth, marketers promoted everything from bamboo floors, hybrid cars, and yes – even chemicals as better for the environment. It seems that a shift is underway from altruistic messages and transforming to align green with cost savings and efficiency. Will green really save our economy along with the environment? I don’t know, but marketers are going to try.
I’m keeping an eye on the IT industry as they look for cost reductions in energy consumption and solution providers struggle to meet demand. How will Intel, Dell, Cisco, and IBM connect efficiency and spin? What buzz words are coming out of McKinsey and Gartner in their guidance?
Where do you think this is going?
